In the 1990’s, a plastic surgeon released a study where he used a commercial tattoo machine to produce multiple punctures in an area of the skin affected by scarring. This resulted in an increased improvement in the appearance of the scarred area. Skin needling has since evolved and is now an advanced and effective method for enhancing the skin’s appearance.
Micro–needling is based on the use of tiny needles to create micro channels (tiny holes) in the skin. The process stimulates your skin’s natural ability to heal itself and in the process produces collagen and elastin. This repair process begins almost immediately and results in a thicker dermis and softened wrinkles or scars. Just like with our Vampire Facial® procedure, micro-needling is targeted at stimulating the body’s ability to produce its own collagen which reduces wrinkles, fine lines, stretch marks, scarring, and other skin malformations. Micro-needling has also been used successfully for hair restoration when combined with platelet rich plasma.
How Does Medical MicroNeedling Work?
With medical micro-needling, a series of very fine needles enter the skin after a topical anesthetic is applied. The needles are at the end of an automated pen-like tool. This is moved over the skin’s surface to create channels or columns through which topical skin treatments, including PRP, can be absorbed. The procedure also stimulates your cells to go into healing mode, generating new collagen.
MicroNeedling is Ideal for Use in:
- Acne scarring including both new and old scars
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Large pores
- Dull skin texture
- Stretch marks
- Platelet rich plasma delivery in general, including in hair restoration
- Microneedling – Face – $275 or series of 3 for $725
- Vampire Facial – Face – $590 or series of 3 for $1,505
- Additional areas also available (ex: Neck, Decolletage, Stretch marks)
These procedures are performed by Beth Wagner, RN

Expectations from Medical Microneedling
Microneedling is a form of what we refer to as ‘collagen induction therapy”. This means that the procedure stimulates your cells to go into repair mode, and produce more collagen as a healing response to the ‘perceived injury’ of the needling. We have fibroblasts in our skin which are capable of producing new collagen. Unfortunately, they do not do so unless they are triggered by a ‘wound’ of sorts. This is the mechanism that kicks in when, for example, you cut yourself. Microneedling is a way to safely produce an ‘injury’ capable of activating this same healing response.
“What is really important to understand is this: A couple of microneedling sessions is not going to suddenly undo 10 to 20 years of collagen loss. I recommend that our clients look to microneedling and the Vampire facial (microneedling with PRP) as a powerful procedure if done in a series and if done as a maintenance procedure after something more aggressive like Profound RF. The aging process is collagen loss, period. So what we do to reverse that on a month to month basis is reasonably called anti-aging. But you do not suddenly undo 10 years with 1 or 2 microneedling sessions. The best part about microneedling, especially when combined with platelet rich plasma, is that you can boost your collagen and elastin in a very powerful way with little or no downtime and relatively low cost. That to me makes so much more sense that the average “salon facial” which is really just a relaxation experience with perhaps a light exfoliation. My grandmother used to call those ‘Foo Foo Facials’, Foo Foo meaning ‘Fluff’. Not to be disrespectful, we all could use a nice massage, but that is not what the typical medispa client is looking for. When you have significant age and sun related damage, you are officially ‘beyond Foo Foo’. It would not be unrealistic for a client in her 40’s and beyond to need 4 to 6 microneedling sessions before being really pleased with her progress. It just really all depends on how much collagen loss she is starting with. But once you have ‘topped off the collagen tank’ so to speak, you can then do well with one treatment every 4 months just to replace what collagen was lost through aging in that time period. And, if you are using medical grade skincare, you could drop that down to one session every 6 months.” – Dr. Lisa Vuich
Will it Hurt?
Microneedling is not painful. A topical numbing cream makes this one of the least uncomfortable medispa treatments there is. Expect to be somewhat red, like a flushed appearance afterward. This resolves quickly, especially if platelet rich plasma is used- the Vampire Facial.
What is the Down Time?
Expect to be slightly red, which we describe as looking flushed. There is no pain post procedure. The skin will be slightly sensitive, meaning that post procedure skin care may need to be adjusted accordingly for 7 to 10 days. Some will experience a light flaking or exfoliation, but this is not universal. There is no need to take time off work, but we would not suggest microneedling immediately before a social event.
At Renew MediSpa we highly recommend Oxygenetix foundation post procedure. It is very healthy for the skin, allowing it to breathe, and will not irritate the skin barrier that has been compromised. There are many shades available to achieve the perfect match to your underlying skin tone.

We are happy to help you determine which collagen induction procedure is best for your concerns. In addition to medical microneedling and the Vampire Facial (microneedling with PRP) our other collagen induction procedures include:
PICO Genesis Laser Facial: Especially for those with added pigment concerns-done in a series
Laser Genesis Laser Facial: Especially for those with facial redness and Rosacea-done in a series
Profound RF: Especially for those looking for lower face and/or neck lift in addition to smoothing-usually single procedure
Ultherapy: Microfocused ultrasound collagen induction-1 to 3 sessions
Viora: Radiofrequency based collagen induction-done in a series
Pellevé®: Radiofrequency based collagen induction-done in a series
Thread Lifting: Approximately twice a year
Vampire Face Lift: Dermal filler + platelet rich plasma: approximately once a year
The Idun Lift (Thread lifting + dermal filler + platelet rich plasma): approximately once a year
Which procedure(s) you choose will depend on a number of factors:
- How much collagen loss do you have?
- How much volume loss do you have?
- What age related changes bother you the most?
- How quickly do you need to see improvement (weeks vs. months)?
- What is your tolerance for downtime such as swelling, bruising, temporary marks on the skin?
- What other associated concerns are there? (Excess Pigment? Redness?)
- What is your budget?
- What is your personal preference? (“all natural” vs “open to injectables and threads” for example)
- Your schedule? (Need to be “one and done” versus a procedure done in series for example)
A consultation to review your current situation, your aesthetic goals and your ‘timetable for improvement’ is a valuable tool to determine which procedures are the best fit for you.
